Meanwhile, a meeting took place one evening, Belgium's general staff leader ordered de Witte to battle a dismantled method in an effort to revoke the Germans advantage they had over them in terms of the number of troops they had. From transmission interruptions, the Belgian base of operations found out that the German soldiers were approaching de Witte so they strategically moved their 4th Infantry Brigade to reinstate the Cavalry unit. This fight started at about 08:00 in the morning when a German investigative group approached from Herk-de-Stad and they were engaged with minimal weaponry from the Belgian foot soldiers. Close to 200 soldiers on Belgium's side tried to organize a barricaded stance in an abandoned brewery in Haelen but they were chased out of the building when the German units showed up with field weaponry. Engineers on the Belgian side blew the bridge up, or at least they thought they did but the architecture was only slightly damaged. This failure to bring the bridge over Gete down allowed the Germans the upper hand to send in about 1,000 soldiers into the heart of Haelen.
